Watertstone’s

Emma Mileham, WATERSTONE’S NORTHAMPTON

You must read Barry Nugent’s ‘Fallen Heroes’ if you enjoy books that entertain and amuse! This story pulls together loads of ideas and genres and will appeal to fans of the Da Vinci Code, Misssion Impossible, James Bond to name but a few. Ben ‘The Hand’ Ashodi reminded me of the smart Alec Elvis Cole in the Robert Crais L.A. crime books or perhaps Myron Boliar in Harlan Coben’s thrillers, maybe even Lawrence Block’s ‘burglar’ stories featuring Bernie Rhodenbarr. If you enjoyed The ‘A’ team, love Indiana Jones and enjoy the fantasy of ‘X-men’ you’ll really relish this stylish action-packed adventure.

If you like your heroes flawed & your villains scary, this is the book for you!
A fantastic mix of Fantasy, Spies & Sci-Fi, with all the best elements of James Bond meets Indiana Jones.
This book will keep you gripped through out, guessing till the very end & desperate for the sequel in this trilogy.

THREE thumbs up (anyone got a spare thumb?)

Welcome Back, Pulp Adventure!, February 1, 2008

Nugent has crafted a pulp inspired sweeping adventure novel that is both exciting and breathtaking. His grasp on characters and motivations feels very inspired from the likes of old black and white pulp serials and Indiana Jones as much as modern television, such as perhaps Spooks. This book is fun, but it’s also well written with passion and a love for adventure that transcends genres and comes across as just a great read. Napoleon Stone, who we see on the cover, is a fully realized character with demons of his own.
At the end of the day, a book should be entertaining, and you aren’t going to find anything more entertaining than Fallen Heroes. Highly recommended!

A thrilling mix of genres and concepts that doesn’t fail to entertain., 23 Jul 2008

Fallen heroes is a thrilling mix of fantasy, thriller and modern day adventure that doesn’t fail to excite. The book is an ensemble piece and the author managees to balance each character’s contribution so that no-one is left out of the action. For those of us who visualize what we read, the action set-pieces are described in enough detail that every move can be followed.

A must for all fantasy and thriller fans, 3 Jul 2008

I picked this book up on the recommendation of a friend, and I have to say that ‘Fallen Heroes’ is an incredibly good read; it has wonderfully fleshed out characters and a gripping plot which combines the best elements of thriller, fantasy and horror genres. The interweaving storylines make for a compulsive read, and the personal connection with the cast left me wanting to read more….please?

As well as developing likeable characters (and some you’ll love to hate!), the author brings in a few neat concepts that break the mould of what has come before. Brilliant stuff all round.

Action packed from start to finish, 4 Feb 2008

Barry Nugent’s book is an adrenaline ride from start to finish. It reminded me of a Da Vinci Code-style thriller which throws you from scene-to-scene as layer upon layer of a mystery is unwrapped before your eyes.

Fallen Heroes – this book reignited my passion for fiction, 2 Feb 2008

I loved this book from beginning to end and struggled to put it down. I’ve not read a novel for a good few years and this has made me realise what I have been missing.

Nugent balances a complex number of characters, situations and plot twists excellently and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.

There was just the right balance of description vs. action. Nugent is not the kind of author to spend too long setting a scene with unnecessary exposition, rather describing it so vividly as to land the reader in the heart of the scene.

I could not put this book down, it was a brilliant read and a great diversion from the daily humdrum. Taking cues from James Bond, Indiana Jones and a host of pulp heroes Barry Nugent has woven an intricate plot, full of intrigue and action. He has managed to do this and at the same time create believable and fully rounded characters you care about and want to follow.

The book shares some similarities with the Heroes TV show, because Fallen Heroes also presents a large ensemble cast of seemingly unrelated people. Then over the course of the book the links and interwoven plots start to fall into place one by one.

I think Fallen Heroes will go on to launch a series of pulp stories from Nugent and I think a TV series of the book would be a surefire winner too.

Exciting page turner, 10 Aug 2007

I really enjoyed reading this book. I felt I got to know the various characters cared about what happened to them.

One of my favourite scenes it towards the end of the book. It is written in a unusual style which very cleverly puts the reader right in the middle of what would otherwise have been a complicated idea to convey.

Well formed characters and an exciting story line, what more could you want! Well, actually there is more to want, and that’s the next book. Please don’t make us wait too long for it.

Brilliant!, 10 Aug 2007

This was a really really good read. It reads like Indiana Jones meets James Bond, which is an awesome combo right there. What more could you want than spies, thieves, rogue government agencies, cults, booby traps and a bald guy with an eye patch?

This is a well written, well paced and very exciting book, intertwining many characters and sub plots into one cohesive and entertaining story. The characters are all very different, yet each likeable in their own way, and there is something here for everyone.

If you like reading, I’d say give this a shot.

Fallen Heroes was a GREAT book! By about page 5 it kicked into high gear, kicked [...], and never let up. The characters were all so well-formed and interesting that, after the planned trilogy, the author could make whole books concentrating on individual characters in the world he has created here.
If you like great action and adventure with a dash of the supernatural thrown in, this is the book for you.

A fantastic book! – a mixture of fantasy, Indiana Jones type action and a dash of James Bond. This books got characters to love and hate, and is a rollercoaster of a read. Highly recommended!

There is so much I love about this book, I don’t know where to begin. The characters are so well portrayed and the scenes truly exquisite. A wonderful read.

A solid introduction to a new supernatural urban fantasy action series. There’s a little bit of something for everyone in this book, and I’m eagerly looking forward to the next volume.
